Coaching Case Study
“I have been working with Erik over the last year and through his coaching I have been able to believe in myself and be more confident in my decisions. I have been able to see new challenges as opportunities instead of blockers. In addition, I have been able to help those around me by being more focused and intentional in my actions.”
Matt D., Coaching Client
Matt D.'s journey through coaching with me is a testament to the transformative power of personal development and strategic guidance. When Matt first approached coaching, he was entangled in a web of anxiety and dissatisfaction stemming from various aspects of his life, including his new job, family dynamics, volunteer work, and concerns about his future. It was a period marked by a deep sense of uncertainty and fear, overshadowing his potential for growth and fulfillment.
Over six months, Matt and I embarked on a collaborative journey, employing a tailored blend of design thinking activities, Positive Intelligence training, and Co-Active coaching techniques. Our objective was clear: to transition Matt's mindset from one dominated by scarcity and fear to one characterized by abundance and curiosity. This shift was not about denying the reality of his challenges but about reframing his perspective to see beyond immediate obstacles and recognize the wealth of possibilities around him.
Through dedicated sessions, Matt began to harness the power of his own mindset, learning to identify and seize opportunities that previously went unnoticed. This newfound outlook enabled him to adopt a leadership style that was not only innovative but also inspiring. He cultivated a team that mirrored his risk-taking and fearless approach, transforming them into a group of future leaders within his organization. This change did not go unnoticed; other managers began seeking Matt's advice, eager to replicate his success and foster a similar culture within their teams.
The culmination of our work together marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Matt. Empowered by his personal and professional growth, he decided to further his education and gain practical experience by job shadowing a colleague in a role he aspires to achieve in the coming years. This decision reflects Matt's commitment to continuous learning and his desire to expand his horizons.
Matt's story is a powerful illustration of how my targeted blend of coaching techniques can help unlock an individual's potential and lead to profound changes not just in their personal life but also in their professional environment. It showcases the ripple effect of personal transformation, influencing not only the individual but also those around them, and underscores the importance of a supportive and strategic coaching relationship in navigating life's complexities.

Marta B., Training Client
The engagement with the Project Management Institute Pittsburgh Chapter presented a unique challenge: a board deeply entrenched in uncertainty, far removed from its values. This dissonance was not just theoretical; it manifested in conflict during strategic sessions, undermining the board's efficacy and morale. Recognizing the urgency of realigning the board with its core values, I embarked on a carefully tailored training initiative centered around human-centered design principles.
The initial phase of the intervention focused on fostering empathy and understanding. By exploring identity lenses, I aimed to open pathways to empathy, encouraging board members and volunteers to view situations and conflicts through the perspectives of their colleagues. This approach was designed not just to mitigate existing tensions but to lay a foundational understanding of each other's experiences and viewpoints.
As the training progressed, we delved into the nuances of interpersonal dynamics. This segment was crucial in addressing the root causes of the board's discord, providing tools and frameworks for constructive interaction and conflict resolution. The diversity of the group – spanning various identities and industries – added depth to our discussions, challenging participants to confront and dismantle the cliques that had fragmented the board.
The culmination of our 8-hour engagement was a collaborative effort to redefine the Chapter's direction. Together, participants crafted a new vision that resonated with their collective aspirations and the realities of their diverse backgrounds. More importantly, the board co-created a set of empathy-based values, a tangible reflection of their renewed commitment to leading with understanding and compassion. These values, now in the process of being implemented across Chapter events, symbolize a profound transformation from a state of division to one of unified purpose and respect.
This series of training engagements not only resolved the immediate crises of conflict and disunity but also equipped the PMI Pittsburgh Chapter with the tools and mindset for sustainable, empathetic leadership. The journey from discord to collaboration underscores the power of human-centered design in fostering environments where empathy, understanding, and shared vision can thrive, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth and renewal.
